APPELLATE
ADVOCACY
We
have extensive experience in briefing and arguing appeals
in the Federal Courts of Appeals and in the Massachusetts
Supreme Judicial Court and Appeals Court. We have won
many reversals of criminal convictions and have advanced
arguments which have resulted in significant developments
in the law. Our appellate practice includes several
appearances in the United States Supreme Court, including:
United
States v. Muscarello (1998), a case deciding whether
having a gun in the trunk of a car constitutes "use
of a firearm."
Hurley
v. Irish-American Gay Lesbian and Bisexual Group
at Boston (1995), a case in which we represented
a gay and lesbian group who sued for the right to be
included in Boston's St. Patrick's Day Parade.
We
also filed an amicus brief in United States v. Labonte
(1997), a case involving the interpretation of "maximum
sentence" under the Guidelines.
